BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Longtime Bellingham resident Gary Everett Longanecker, passed away quietly on the evening of Dec. 30, 2010. He fought a courageous battle against Emphysema and COPD Lung disease. His proud parents Harold and Eunice, welcomed Gary to the world on Oct. 12, 1940. He was the second son born to the couple. The Longanecker family when complete consisted of six sons. The family resided in Brainerd, Minn.
Gary (Butch) joined the U.S. Navy in 1956. The memory of time spent on the U.S.S. Boston Battleship was especially memorable. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1961. Upon completion of his military service, Gary began his long career with the Northern Pacific Railroad. At some point in his 30-plus year tenure with the railroad, the company changed names to Burlington Northern Railroad. Gary retired from Burlington Northern in 2002. Gary was involved with the community in his younger years. He coached soccer, assisted with Boy Scouts and donated his time as a part-time volunteer firefighter during the 70s.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Harold Longanecker; and brother, Don Longanecker. He is survived by his mother, Eunice; brothers, Tom and Scott, all of Brainerd, Minn.; brother, Gordon, Bellingham Wash.; and brother, Mike, Klamath Falls, Ore. Gary also leaves his children, Chris Longanecker, and his family, Kim, Cody, Blaine and Christopher, all of Bellingham Wash., Sherrie Daley, and her family, Zachary and Samantha, of Everett, Wash., Rose Forsness, Rod Forsness and wife, Denise, and family Jake and Karlie, all of Benton City, Wash., Delamie, of Montana, Vickie Smith and husband, Don, and family Justin, Katie, all of Kennewick, Wash., Janet Chunn and husband, Malcom and family, Matt, Calvin, Alec, all of Richland, Wash.; and numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At Gary’s request, no funeral services will take place. He will greatly be missed by his family. Thanks for being such a great father!
