PEQUOT LAKES — Harold Joseph Thompson, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., died in Minneapolis on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, of complications from heart surgery. He was 75. Harold was born in Duluth on Sept. 30, 1935, and lived in or near Nisswa nearly his entire life. His parents, Irene and Ben Thompson, ran a neighborhood store and a truck farm in Nisswa. The third of four children, he graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd, then Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He married Nancy Lee Scott, whose family owned a cabin on Gull Lake down the road from his parents’ home, in 1958. After serving in the U.S. Army in Fort Ripley, Kan., and working as a welder in Winona, Harold settled with Nancy and their growing family in Nisswa, where Harold worked for Nisswa Marine, specializing in boat restoration. For many years he was the only wooden-boat expert in central Minnesota. He restored hundreds of classic wooden boats over the years, and also served as a volunteer fireman for the city of Nisswa. He and Nancy raised two children, Micheal and Maria.
Harold retired from Nisswa Marine about 10 years ago. In the 1980s he and Nancy had moved to rural Pequot Lakes, where together they designed and built a log house in the middle of 80 acres, a lifelong dream. He spent his retirement years reading, cutting wood on his property, helping his children with house projects, taking care of horses, restoring and enjoying a wooden boat of his own, and traveling with Nancy — on a trip this fall, they explored islands in Quebec and Ontario.
Harold is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Maria (married to James Seep); his son, Micheal (married to Rebecca Ganzel); his granddaughter, Caroline Maria Thompson; his sisters-in-law, Karen Sunding Thompson and Kathryn Scott Sorenson; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, (conversation and reminiscing at 10 a.m.) at the Nisswa Community Center, 25628 Main Street, Nisswa.
Memorial preferred in lieu of flowers.
