NISSWA - Dr. R. W. Poppie, age 80, formerly of Brainerd, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. Robert was born on July 30, 1930, in Grafton, N.D., son of William and Myrtle (Sjulli) Poppie. He grew up and lived in Hope, N.D., until attending the University of North Dakota where he studied medicine and then completed his medical degree in Baltimore, Md., in 1955. He served six years in the National Guard and then as an attending physician in the Army from 1955-1958. He completed his surgical residency in Fargo, N.D., on Nov. 1, 1959. He is preceded in death by his mother; father; daughter, Teresa; sister, Marilyn; and brother-in-law, Peter Geron. On Aug. 31, 1953, Robert married Rose Marie Chromy and they had six children, Deborah (Jim) Dubois and their children, Katherine and Morgan, William (Gretchen) Poppie and their children, Aaron and Lars, James (Shannon) Poppie and their children, Claire and Lauren, David (Kristine) Poppie and their children Reece and Regan, Daniel (Jeanie) Poppie and their children, Joshua, Christine and Nathan. Robert and Rose Marie moved to Brainerd in 1959 and made the lakes area their home for the last 51 years. He practiced medicine at St. Joseph's Medical Center and had a private practice until 1979. He enjoyed taking care of people and loved to hunt and fish. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be preferred to be donated by the family to various organizations. Services will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Park United Methodist Church in Brainerd with Pastor Rory Swenson officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services.
