Herbert A. Torgerson, age 81, of Brainerd, Minn., and formerly of Bemidji, Minn., died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, in Brainerd. Herb was born in 1930 to Walter and Alice (Heath) Torgerson in Motley, Minn., and grew up in Brainerd. In his youth, his passion was boxing and he was proud to be a part of the Golden Glove Boxing Organization. Herb enjoyed all sports, including the MN Twins, MN Vikings and following Bemidji High School sports. He also enjoyed deer hunting with his family in Solway.

CROSBY — Mary Elizabeth Hartung, age 79, of Crosby, died on Feb. 10, 2011, at Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby. She was born on Aug. 15, 1931, in Crosby to Harold and Iris (Orr) Moore. She married Donald H. Hartung on Dec. 11, 1948, in Crosby.

CROSSLAKE - Ruth Ann Kuhlman, 83, of Crosslake, passed away Feb. 7, 2011, at the Florida Hospital-Kissimmee, Fla. A funeral service for Ruth Ann will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Mission of the Cross Lutheran Church in Crosslake with Pastor Leslie Uhrinak officiating. Family and friends are welcome to visit on Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake and on Thursday morning at the church one hour prior to services. WHITE BEAR LAKE — Michael Stephen Vogel, age 27, of White Bear Lake, passed away suddenly on Feb. 9, 2011.

He was born in Brainerd on Aug. 6, 1983. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Michael was an avid card player, loved football and enjoyed animals and reptiles. He was in his second year of classes at Century College in White Bear Lake for computer visual technology, learning web design.

John Greig, age 62, of Brainerd (formerly St. Paul), passed away on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011.  Survived by wife, Deborah; brothers, Richard (Brenda) and Tom; sister, Jane; stepmother, June; also aunts, uncles, cousins and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, Anna and Ralph; sister, Cheryl; sister-in-law, Marie. A memorial service will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11 in the Fireside Room at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia, Minn.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Park United Methodist Church in Brainerd. Friends are invited to gather beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church to visit with her family before services. Interment will be in the Spring in Lake Ripley Cemetery at Litchfield, Minn.

BACKUS — Jay Schmidtke, age 89, of Backus, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at his home. He was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Charles City, Iowa, to George and Martha Schmidtke. Jay served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He owned Pine Mountain Resort since 1963. He was an active member of the Backus American Legion and loved fishing and trapping.
