Rollo Winegarner, of Winegarner Insurance Agency on Laurel Street, has been selected as district agent of the year by American Family Insurance. The award goes to an agent showing knowledge, performance, leadership and service.

30 years ago (1984)

The Brainerd Warriors are champion for the first time in the five years of their Loren Thompson Memorial Hockey Tournament, topping Mahtomedi in the title game. Warrior captain Kurt Muesing earned the tournament’s most valuable defenseman award.

40 years ago (1974)

Louis Polasik has been named general manager of the Crow Wing Cooperative Power and Light Co., replacing the late Kenneth Wolleat. Polasik was born and raised in Little Falls and has an extensive background in electric cooperative work.

60 years ago (1954)

Members of the Ironton American Legion Post are distressed over the loss of New Year’s Eve receipts from the club. About 6:30 a.m. someone broke into the club and took a safe containing $1,000 cash. The safe was found later but the money was missing.

80 years ago (1934)

Charles Hughes, the depot custodian, was considerably surprised New Year’s morning when he entered the ladies waiting room to find that a cocker spaniel had given birth to eight pups. Hughes isn’t sure whether he, as finder, or the railroad is responsible for the pups.
