Sub-zero Christmas Eve temperatures and a broken sprinkler pipe combined to wreak havoc with the Pine River High School gymnasium floor and covered half the school’s floor space. The bill for the holiday mishap may come to $30,000 to replace the gym floor.

Eugene (Bud) Kisskeys can’t be both a Crow Wing County deputy sheriff and the mayor of Baxter, according to an opinion by the state Attorney General’s office. Kisskeys, who has served on the city council, was elected by write-in votes to replace Don Sande.

Marine Major H.L. Jacobi, son of the Herman Jacobis of Route 4, Brainerd, has been awarded the Gold Star in Lieu of his third Distinguished Flying Cross. Jacobi was honored for his action in leading a Marine attack squadron in a Korean battle.

Responsibility for negotiating a new electric contract for the city of Brainerd was thrown back into the lap of the city council after voters turned down a $350,000 bond issue by 1,087 to 650. The bonds would have funded an electric and steam generation plant.
