Abas Korchari, owner of Charlie’s Restaurant in the Brainerd Mall, got a Christmas present this past year that was a dream come true. Charlie, who escaped from a Communist Albania prison camp 40 years ago, went home to reunite with his family.

(Photo) Damage was estimated at $3,000 when a pickup truck struck the front of Char’s Country Sampler restaurant on Front Street. The truck, driven by a Brainerd woman, was entering a parking space when the brakes failed and it shot across the sidewalk.
40 years ago (1973)
Judge Gaylord Saetre has ruled against both the Brainerd school board and the Brainerd teachers union in their efforts to change provisions in the master contract handed down by an arbitrator. Saetre said since both agreed to arbitration they’ll have to live with the result.

Brainerd women bowlers were among prize winners in the state Women’s Bowling Assn. tournament. The Vogue tied for 36th place in the team event, winning $18, and Lakeside Bar was 43rd, good for $17. Betty Moerke and Coletta Mott were 15th in doubles.

Fred Britton won the rifle which was a prize for marksmanship at the penny arcade shooting gallery and won’t compete in the next rifle shoot. He is such a crack shot that he is only allowed to win three turkeys at the Thanksgiving shoot, then puts his rifle away.
