A somewhat peeved Baxter City Council shelved a request for a donation to the annual Brainerd-Baxter 4th of July fireworks. Council members said they’d have to wait until May. They had specifically asked for a request to be made early for budget consideration.

The number of burglaries in Brainerd and the county which have been solved by the arrest of three juveniles has climbed to 25 law officers said. Many items have been recovered. The latest burglaries cleared up were of summer homes on Lake Hubert.

Brainerd voters re-elected Mayor Levi Johnson by a narrow 1,513 to 1,473 margin over restaurant owner Leonard Boeder in yesterday’s city election. Only councilman defeated was Vernon Olson, who lost to former councilman Howard Blanck in the 5th Ward.

A great crusade for the “Common Good” will be launched as an army of 70 civic spirited persons, fresh from a pep fest, will canvass the home of every able-bodied person to raise funds in the war against want and distress. The Dispatch made the first donation.
100 years ago (1913)
D.H. Norton, a transient, charged in district court with being drunk, was fined $10 or 10 days. He peeled off a 10 from a roll of bills big enough to choke a horse and promptly paid his fine. Officer Nordstrom had made the arrest.
