A majority of Arvig Telcom’s shareholders have signed a letter of intent to sell their stock to Telephone and Data Systems, a publicly held telcom company from Chicago. TDS is a diversified company with 95 local telephone companies in 29 states.

A Brainerd firefighter and a sheriff’s department investigator recently completed a state course in advanced arson investigation. Bill Timmons, an engineer with the Brainerd Fire Dept., and Sgt. Frank Ball of the sheriff’s office took the three-day course.
40 years ago (1973)
The sheriff’s office and area police are searching for two armed burglars. Owners of a cabin in the woods near Emily returned there to find two men looting it. The owners fired shots in the air to scare them off. The burglars fired back, and then took off in their car.
60 years ago (1953)
The proposed $1.9 million school bond issue, if approved at the Nov. 10 special election, will increase the average Brainerd property owner’s taxes by 10 percent. A man now paying $100 would owe $110. The bonds will be paid off over 25 to 30 years.
80 years ago (1933)
Another historic landmark in the Brainerd area fell to the elements when the Halfway House was swept by fire. The former hotel, located on Bishop’s Creek between Gull and Round Lakes, was a stopover for travelers between Brainerd and Walker 50 years ago.
100 years ago (1913)
After a day of rejoicing by Brainerd people, which included meeting Leslie Bush at the depot and a parade through town, came the banquet for 200 at the Ransford Hotel. Many speakers were followed by “Bullet Joe,” who said how proud he was to be from Brainerd.
