Steve Bourassa was easy to spot as he walked off the plane at the Brainerd airport. He was the only passenger flanked by a black Labrador retriever. Bourassa’s new friend Sebastian is a guide dog, which the Merrifield Lions helped him obtain.
30 years ago (1983)
A tip through “Crime Stoppers,” prompted by a story in the Dispatch, has solved the burglary at the Bonanza Restaurant. A phone tip to Baxter police led to arrest of two men who slid down a greasy ventilation shaft to steal a safe. The safe and money were found.
40 years ago (1973)
The Lakeshore Rod and Gun Club, working with Joe Fraune, area fisheries manager of the DNR, has stocked 60,000 fingerling walleyes into Gull Lake this month. The 3-inch fish were raised in the club’s Elwell Road rearing pond, said the club’s Bob Bayarle.
60 years ago (1953)
Fishing doldrums which lasted a month here were broken by big fish entered at Cole’s Sports Shop. Among entries this past week were a 10-pound walleye at Whitefish Lake, two six-pound plus largemouth bass out of the Gull River, and a 17-3 northern.
80 years ago (1933)
Planting of 12,000 sunfish and 2,500 bass in Brainerd lakes has been completed by John Herderly of the state game and fish dept. and raised at the Gull River hatchery. There were no sunfish in Lake Edward until 1918, when Al Weidemann planted blue gills.
100 years ago (1913)
An enthusiastic meeting of the Boosters Club was held at the council chambers. The first matter discussed was sinking of a shaft on S. 6th Street by the Brainerd-Cuyuna Mining Co. Second was a motion favoring a new court house instead of repairs to the old one.
