From schoolchildren to tourists, more than 8,000 people have trekked through the Paul Bunyan Nature Learning Center this summer. Director Rudy Hillig wishes it could have been more, say 10,000. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe helps support the center.

The anti-fluoride forces here plan to appear before the city council to seek a further stay in placing fluoride in the city’s water. Irene Johnson, anti-fluoride leader, said her group will seek to present a bill to the next Legislature asking for local option for Brainerd.

Speedy Len Hildebrandt swept through a hole between center and left guard for a 70-yard TD romp in the first quarter, and a stout Brainerd Warrior defense made that stand up for a 7-0 season opening victory over the visiting St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders.
80 years ago (1933)
Crow Wing County voted in favor of repealing prohibition by a total of 3,010 to 1,367. This margin was reflected in the state vote, where Minnesotans voted for repeal by more than 2 to 1. Minnesota becomes the 29th state to vote repeal; 36 states are needed.
100 years ago (1913)
Gus Schmidt, a saloon keeper at Oreland, was arrested for running an unlicensed drinking place. Some time ago the saloons were voted out at Oreland. Mr. Schmidt, oblivious to this minor distinction, kept on selling. His case comes for trial September 20.
