Tessa Domeier, Garrison, wrote a letter to the Dispatch complaining about the “Lion’s head” water fountain in front of the Brainerd chamber office running continuously, wasting water. The Lions Club listened, and has ordered parts to repair the fountain.

(Photos) A Harasser lure was used by Brainerd area guide Smokey Rathbun to land this 32-pound muskie, fishing in six feet of water. LeRoy Frost of Pillager caught this 26-8 muskie in three feet of water, using a Legend Spinner for bait.

Beatsie Fieldman, Brainerd women’s club champion for seven straight seasons, fell 2 and 1 to 20-year-old Lindsay Willis for this year’s crown. Veteran Leo Marchel, Sr., a three-time former winner, blitzed defending champ Joe Ahlers for the men’s title.

John Chalberg, dean of Brainerd Junior College, said today there has been some misunderstanding among prospective students as to fees. They came set to pay $300 for tuition and books. He says that’s exorbitant; actual fees are less than half that amount.

Somewhere between Boston and Minneapolis, an express train is speeding an “iron lung” to bring relief – or life – to a Brainerd youth stricken with polio. The Red Cross is counting on the ambition and resourcefulness of area citizens to pay for the machine.
100 years ago (1913)
When Mayor Henning returned to the city clerk without his signature the ordinance authorizing the street railway franchise he, in effect, vetoed it. The charter provides for a two-thirds vote of the council to override the veto. The ordinance had passed by 9-1.
