Brainerd High School social studies teacher Dave LaShomb has been named one of 12 finalists in the Minnesota Teacher of the Year competition. LaShomb teaches Advanced Placement Comparative Government and social studies, and is also a coach and adviser.

Next time Ruthann Kostek’s eight-year-old son tells her there’s a bear in their front yard, she’ll believe him. His startling report prompted skepticism until she saw the full-grown bruin face-to-face. “I grabbed all the kids and we ran in the house,” she said.

The Water and Light Board announced that water and sewage rates will increase by 50 percent across the board on September 1st. Purpose is to “substantially reduce anticipated net operating losses of $100,000 during the coming year.”

Tuesday was Brainerd’s hottest day of the year, but the record appeared in danger at noon today as the mercury continued to climb. Yesterday’s high was 90, beating out June 12, when thermometers hit 89.

Prairie chicken and sharptailed grouse may be hunted in 28 Minnesota counties – including Crow Wing and Cass – in the season which opens at noon on Sept. 16. The season closes at sunset on Sept. 20th. The Aitkin County season closes on Sept. 24th.
100 years ago (1913)
Businessmen and Northeast Brainerd residents are objecting to the delay in repairing the bridge over the ravine due to lack of workers. It is closed to traffic and wagons must make a detour of three miles by way of the cemetery or by Oak Street and past the shops.
