Alexandria defeated Brainerd 3-1 in the semis of the state VFW baseball tournament, then went on to beat South St. Paul 12-11 for the title. Brainerd bounced back to defeat Hibbing 4-1 to take the 3rd place crown. The tournament was hosted by Brainerd.

A bullet struck a United Power Assn. truck near Outing but missed the two occupants, according to the sheriff’s office. A 13-year-old boy admitted firing the shot but wasn’t aiming at the truck. The bullet went through the truck door and lodged in seat supports.

George Kriha, Brainerd’s assistant city engineer, has resigned to accept a position with 3M Co. in St. Paul. Kriha, who has been the asst. engineer since the position was created in 1968, will be a senior design engineer for 3M. He is a graduate of the Univ. of Minn.

(Adv.) Starts tomorrow for four big days . . . There’s a score to settle – and this is it. “Shane,” starring Alan Ladd, Van Heflin and Jean Arthur, with Jack Palance, at the Gull Drive-In Theatre – on Hwy 371 North of Brainerd.

While casting for bass at South Long Lake, S.A. Nesheim of Brainerd caught and landed an 18-pound northern on 16-lb. test line. The fish, which struck a mouse lure, took 25 minutes to land. It is on display in Hostager’s window.
100 years ago (1913)
In a fit of anger caused by difficulties with relatives, an 18-year-old youth committed suicide Saturday evening on S. Laurel Street. He swallowed carbolic acid and died in ten minutes. George Sylvester tried to knock the bottle away and was burned in the face.
