The sheriff’s office took a bite out of crime when it recovered a stolen 7-foot Tootsie Roll. Dick Endres of the Knights of Columbus, said the candy was stolen from a mount on his car. Sgt. Frank Ball said some kids “stole it back from the kid who stole it” and returned it.

40 years ago (1973)

A Brainerd High School student has been elected 1973 president of the Minnesota Future Farmers of America. Greg Schley, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schley, Star Route, was selected during the final session of the state FFA convention.

60 years ago (1953)

Seventeen cats are too much for one home, particularly if neighbors complain about the smell from them. Judge Carl Erickson ordered a resident of S. 9th Street to dispose of her cats and clean up her house by May 15, or he’ll ask the county declare her incompetent.

The Warrior track team, being forced indoors by heavy snow and wet weather, buckled down to intensive training for this week’s district track and field meet. Coach Taylor is greatly handicapped because the greatest squad weakness is in the weight events.

100 years ago (1913)

On the evening of May 15th, Harvey Rice, of Crosby, will wrestle Ed Pelkey, the local wrestler, at the Vernon Gymnasium, 512 Front Street. Rice weighs 146 pounds, stripped, and has never lost a match. Lovers of clean, square sport are urged to attend the match.
