A bill to establish the state’s first recreation area on the Cuyuna Range cleared a House committee yesterday, said Rep. Kris Hasskamp, author of the bill. The bill would create the 5,000 acre Cuyuna Country Recreation Area north of Crosby-Ironton.

Gordon Kahl in Brainerd? Incredible as it seems, the FBI thought that the man sought in a nationwide manhunt for three weeks might be holed up in a southeast Brainerd home. The tip turned out wrong, but only after 40 armed lawmen cordoned off the house.

Thieves took 24 firearms in a burglary at the Deerwood Sports Shop last night. Police said someone rammed a car into a door to gain entrance. The alarm was tripped, but the thieves had escaped before owner Al Habighorst could get there.

(Photo) Naval Aviation Cadet Robert J. Ryan, son of the Clem Ryans of 303 Grove Street, made his first solo flight at the naval auxiliary air station at Whiting Field, Florida. He attended St. John’s University before entering the naval air program.

Brainerd’s Warriors today loomed as a serious threat for the district basketball championship following their amazing performance against reigning champion C-I. Big Joe Perpich, all state center, sank a field goal in OT to give C-I a 31-30 victory.

The largest moose head that has been seen in Brainerd for some time was shipped by taxidermist Ike Frazer of East Brainerd to G. Nold of Campbell, Minn. Campbell hunted near Big Falls last fall. His party shot three deer and Nold shot this monster of a moose.
