Brainerd’s water system received mostly positive marks at Monday’s PUC meeting. A TKDA & Associates engineer said, with few exceptions, Brainerd has ample capacity to produce, pump, store and distribute water to satisfy customers until at least 2005.

30 years ago (1983)

Arson is being investigated in an early morning fire that destroyed a basement office at Washington Junior High School. The fire, which broke out after midnight, did an estimated $10,000 damage. Two youngsters were seen near the school at the time.

Apparently the young people of Brainerd like to swim – not just in summer but all year long. This came to light in a report on a survey conducted by the newly formed Brainerd Recreation Commission. Over 48 percent of students voted for a swimming pool.

Pine River, Pequot, Backus and Jenkins will all vote on the liquor issue again this spring. Pine River and Pequot have no saloons and would like some. Backus and Jenkins are wet and the drys would like to close the saloons. It will be an interesting contest.
