Warrior senior Sarah Northway isn’t fond of the Monticello high school gym. “It’s small, and when it’s really crowded it gets hot.” But Northway scored a game-high 22 points there on Friday to take her past 1,000 points in her Brainerd basketball career.
30 years ago (1983)
Sixteen tires on four vehicles parked behind Franklin Junior High School were slashed by vandals, according to police. Wayne Haugen informed police of the incident which did $1,200 in damage. At the same time, a car on Oak Street had two tires slashed.

Additional soil tests will be taken at the lower high school site, according to the Brainerd School Board. Duane Blanck, of the Stegner, Hendrickson, McNutt architectural firm, said more tests were recommended for the proposed athletic complex.
60 years ago (1953)
With or without reorganization, Brainerd can expect a big increase in school enrollment in the next five years. According to a study done by a school architectural firm looking at building needs, Brainerd enrollment will go from 2,803 now to 3,379 by 1957-58.

After a 12-hour session that lasted until 3:15 a.m., the county commissioners passed a resolution that recommends cutting county officer salaries by 15 to 25 percent, plus wage reductions for clerks. The elective officers voluntarily petitioned the board for the reductions.
100 years ago (1913)
Gull Lake, 12 miles to the west of Brainerd, is to be the scene of building many summer homes this spring. Alderman James Elder intends to build a $7,000 residence on his grounds, which include the historic mission site. Fred Lynch will add to his place.
