20 years ago (1993)

Gov. Arne Carlson and Attorney General Skip Humphrey have teamed to take steps to protect child victims in Crow Wing County. The AG’s office filed a motion in court to act in place of County Attorney Jack Graham in two specific child abuse cases.

30 years ago (1983)

The next time you get a parking ticket, check with the police department before you pay it. It might be a phony. Someone intercepted a box of official tickets that was destined for the police department, but was never delivered, and has been placing them on cars.

40 years ago (1973)

In the greatest slugfest of the entire Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Tournament, welterweight Dick Dean of Brainerd suffered a 3rd round TKO at the hands of St. Paul’s Jim Hegerle. Both boxers were knocked down during this ring classic.

80 years ago (1933)

Three Brainerd men are being held in jail in connection with what is believed to be an attempted liquor hijacking at Norwood and 7th Streets. Responding to a tip, police in an unmarked car broke up the affair. Shots were exchanged but no one was hit.

100 years ago (1913)

Estimates of nearly a million tons are made for the Cuyuna Range output of iron ore this year. Somebody sent out an estimate of 10 million tons, but reliable persons say this number is so palpably absurd as to be harmful in its effects.
