20 years ago (1993)

Today, Jim Langer is wholesale manager of Radco Industries topper division in Brainerd. Twenty years ago he and the Miami Dolphins were preparing to play the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII. Langer anchored the line of that undefeated team.

30 years ago (1983)

The Brainerd High School debate team captured top honors in the 1983 Section Three debate tournament at Aitkin. Andrea Cummings and Holly Koon led the field of ten teams with a 6-0 record. Brainerd is coached by Doug Johnson and Guy Doud.

40 years ago (1973)

The Brainerd United Fund this year raised $54,000 it was announced at a victory dinner at the Country Club. Winston Borden, who headed the drive with Bill Olmsted, said the total represented a 20 percent increase over the amount received last year.

60 years ago (1953)

The blowing of whistles and sirens and the ringing of bells will herald the start of the “Mothers’ March on Polio” on Monday night. Although such devices are usually sounded in emergencies only, the situation is considered just that by the March of Dimes.

80 years ago (1933)

Three boys who took goods from the burned building of the People’s Meat Market were arrested and released on bail. Police tracked them to their homes through fresh snow. The boys said in previous Northeast fires people had been permitted to take things away.

100 years ago (1913)

William Lucas, who has a fine farm near Cross Lake, came to town today with two big timber wolves on which he receives a total $22 bounty. He sold the hides for an additional $7. He is an experienced hunter, and neighbors call him a real wolf detective.
