20 years ago (1993)

County Sheriff Dick Ross said he wants County Attorney Jack Graham out of office. “The lines are drawn,” Ross said. “I want him gone.” Ross said he can longer work with the county attorney’s office. Ross was visibly angry about Graham’s conduct.

30 years ago (1983)

Forced to borrow money to pay its bills, the Brainerd School Board signed a $2.5 million tax anticipation loan with a Twin Cities bank. The loan carries an interest rate of 6.20 percent, meaning the district will pay more than $157,000 in interest.

40 years ago (1973)

(Photo) This 30-3 northern, one of the largest to show up here in many years, was speared in Pelican Lake by Dennis Gustafson of rural Brainerd. He used a homemade decoy in 16 feet of water and earlier had speared a 15-pounder. The lunker was 46.5 inches long.

60 years ago (1953)

80 years ago (1933)

A big lake, a big fish and a big surprise. Joe Fladebo of Isle was spearing at Mille Lacs with little luck. When he pulled up his decoy in disgust, a fish leaped at it and knocked him out of his fish house. He grabbed the northern and weighed it in at 41.5 pounds.

100 years ago (1913)

Brainerd has a chance to land a pickle factory and the Boosters Club has taken it up. The North Branch Pickle Factory is contemplating a move to a more congenial location, at least one where the farmers will raise cucumbers and keep the cannery going.
