Brainerd and Pequot Lakes schools and some 20 other districts in Minnesota will have to take another look at their use of Indian names, symbols and mascots. The State Board of Education is asking the legislature to ban the use of Indian terms by schools.

Warrior swimmer Joe Vrudny has been named the Greg Larson Sports “Warrior Athlete of the Week.” Vrudny set two meet records at the Spring Lake Park Panther Invitational swim meet. The records came in the 100 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.

The grand total mill rate for the city of Brainerd has dropped 24 percent from last year due to new state legislation, said County Auditor Einer Anderson. The legislation greatly increases the amounts for state aid at the city and school district level.

Representatives of the Brainerd Trades and Labor Assembly presented the board of education with a petition signed by 1,400 residents, asking that the board rescind action taken to rename Roosevelt Field to Cobb-LaBar Field. The board will consider it.

Cass County Attorney Ed Rogers revealed that a hired man of the woman charged in the shooting death of a Pine River farmer was the actual killer. The woman, confessing she killed the farmer in self defense, was charged with manslaughter. New charges are coming.
100 years ago (1913)
Occasionally city water during the winter months has been foamy or white in color. The water is not injurious. The clerk of the water and light board says river water is harder during the winter and the chloride added to it does not dissolve so readily.
