About 25,000 gallons of ice cream were ruined this morning when a defrost wire on a freezer door shorted out at the Meadow Gold Ice Cream plant on Front Street. Firemen quickly doused the blaze but the damage had already been done.

Manually operated gates and signals at Brainerd’s three downtown railroad crossings at 4th, 6th and 8th streets has been recommended in a report by the state highway department. The action is prompted by a fatal accident at 13th St. followed by a serious accident at Oak St.

Ed Cummings, stalwart 165-pound highway patrol officer, and Billy Kotka, husky 155-pound butcher, mixed it up in a 5-round boxing exhibition at the Elks Club. Deputy Sheriff George Ridley, a boxer of local renown, was the timekeeper.

The city jail is now steam heated. But, to prevent a general emigration to Brainerd of all hobos in the country who may relish a warm room and a nice bed, Chief of Police Ridley remarked that rations would not be elaborate, probably just bread and water.
