20 years ago (1993)

Bernie Roberts expected some competition, but no one knew just how popular the job was. Roberts was selected from a roster of 125 candidates who had applied to serve out the remaining 1.5 years of Fred Casey’s term on the Brainerd School Board.

30 years ago (1983)

Fluoride foe Irene Johnson took the Brainerd City Council to task for continuing to fluoridate the city’s water despite a council motion which stipulates that it continue only if unfluoridated water is distributed on request. This is not being done.

40 years ago (1973)

60 years ago (1953)

Clyde Peterson of Crosby started the new year off right by hooking a 22-8 northern at Mille Lacs Lake while angling from a darkhouse on New Year’s Day. Since there was a day’s delay in getting it weighed it is believed it may have been 25 pounds when caught.

80 years ago (1933)

Kids, here’s an invitation to attend a movie at the Paramount Theatre for the price of one article of imperishable food – whether a can of corn, jar of preserves, etc. It’s a joint effort of the theatre, the Dispatch and the Lions Club to raise food for the needy.

100 years ago (1913)

So many couples have been married recently, and so much rice has been thrown around the depot and on the platform, that Charles Hughes, custodian of the Northern Pacific Railroad depot, has made a neat sum selling the sweepings for chicken feed.

I have never been paid

more than "chicken feed" for my intensive labours. I draw all my satisfaction from paying taxes, persecuting Lefters and making those working below me miserable. How was your day?
