Crow Wing County’s unemployment rate jumped from 5.0 percent in October to 6.7 percent in November, a bit higher than the normal seasonal surge. Cass County was at 10.3 percent, Todd at 7.0 percent and Wadena at 8.4 percent, close to seasonal norms.

Al Schlegel, Brainerd, recently purchased controlling interest in the Security State Bank of Pillager from M.M. “Red” Welshons, Jr., of Aitkin. Officers and directors will be elected Jan. 9. The bank has served Pillager continuously for 62 years.

The March of Dimes campaign to raise funds to combat polio opened this week. The total to be raised must double that of last year’s $8,500. The 26 cases of polio in the county during the 1952 epidemic cost $17,550 and wiped out all the cash reserves.

Hardly had the county commissioners seated their three new members and reorganized, than they faced the subject of bills for refund of payments to the poor. Towns and cities disburse the money but counties must reimburse 75 cents for each dollar spent.

C.B. White, of White Bros., was supervising construction of an addition to the Lagerquist block at 6th and Maple when a tar bucket caught on fire. In attempting to throw the blazing kettle off the roof, it splashed tar back at him, burning his cheeks and forehead.
