Brainerd Community College basketball players Matt Pecarich and Andrae Bellfield were chosen to the all-tournament team in last week’s Northern Conference Classic at Vermillion. Bellfield scored 54 points and Pecarich 39 in the three games.

30 years ago (1982)

A race matching all-staters Joe Vrudny of Brainerd and Curt Jenkins of Staples highlighted the first ever swim meet between the two schools, Brainerd winning 74-51. Vrudny and Jenkins met in the 500 freestyle, with Vrudny touching out in 5:07.84 to 5:07.86.

40 years ago (1972)

Dave Bailey, 175-pound Golden Glover from Duluth, has fight fans wondering why he hasn’t won an Upper Midwest title. For the second time in two years, Bailey knocked out veteran Mark Herron of Brainerd, this time with a whistling left hook in the first round.

In perusing the Brainerd city directory issued by John Ley, one finds the Andersons predominate in the city. There are 92 Andersons, 91 Petersons, 67 Johnsons, 56 Ericksons, 37 Smiths and 26 Swansons.
