20 years ago (1992)

The winter sports season gets under way in the Brainerd lakes area with seven girls’ basketball games, two hockey games and two community college basketball games. By Saturday they will add one gymnastics and eight wrestling meets to the schedule.

30 years ago (1982)

Randy Hansen, Brainerd High School and Concordia College graduate who teaches at Nisswa Elementary, is the new wrestling coach at Pine River High School. He replaces another Brainerd grad, Don Bahr, who resigned after nine seasons there.

40 years ago (1972)

A site plan and report on the county’s sanitary landfill were presented to the board of commissioners. It would involve using 16 acres of the county’s 480-acre parcel northeast of Brainerd off Hwy 210. Brainerd will close its landfill January 1, so approval is urgent.

80 years ago (1932)

Facing almost certain defeat because of the lethargic attitude displayed by a great many citizens, the Brainerd Community Relief Fund will be reorganized by its directors. To date, the drive has only brought in $1,537 of the $5,000 needed for winter necessities for the poor.

100 years ago (1912)

One lonely drunk appeared in municipal court this morning. He had no money but a good excuse, and the judge took pity on him and let him go on parole. If he falls from the narrow path he will be taken forthwith to the house of repentance – the city jail.
