Friday’s state swimming preliminaries marked the end of the high school season for Crystal Ludwig, who failed to advance in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Renee Linn, who missed qualifying in the 100-yard backstroke. Joe Vrudny stepped down as coach.

30 years ago (1982)

What does it cost to run for county judge, or perhaps for state representative? Marianne Milloy spent a record $5,600 in a losing campaign against Bob Kautz, who spent $3,600. Steve Wenzel spent $23,000 to win the 13B race against Howard Warnberg, who spent $4,200.

40 years ago (1972)

60 years ago (1952)

A former Brainerd resident has been named administrative assistant to the vice president of Northwest Airlines. He is Robert Ebert, who practiced law here from 1940 to 1942. His parents still live here, and brother Richard is an attorney with Ryan, Ryan and Ebert.

80 years ago (1932)

The city of Brainerd would further perpetuate the memory of George Washington on the occasion of his 200th birthday by renaming Main Street as Washington Street. Rev. Edgar Valiant of the Baptist Church also proposes naming the new bridge after Washington.

100 years ago (1912)

Frank Weitzel has returned from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he has been holding down a mining claim. He had a lively time on the Canadian Northern Railway, being in a wreck which killed a coach load of Chinamen.
