The Brainerd City Council approved a joint powers agreement which consolidates the Brainerd Fire Department and Rural Fire Assn. into a Brainerd Lakes Fire and Rescue District. The purpose is to cut duplication and allow better use of resources.

30 years ago (1982)

Employment in the Brainerd area took a nosedive in the 3rd quarter, dropping by 467 jobs. The drop hit every major classification except finance. The national 10 percent unemployment rate will probably mean the local number will dive in the 4th quarter, also.

The “Happy Warrior” came to Brainerd yesterday to campaign for local DFL candidates and to meet an 89-year-old woman who has been one of his most loyal supporters. Hubert Humphrey met with Edna Bowler of rural Crosby during a luncheon at the Starlite Club.

E. L. Leicher, superintendent of the Luverne Auto Co., was here demonstrating the car made by his factory. It is the only pleasure car made in Minnesota. The 50 horsepower, six cylinder machine is often referred to as the “Brown Beauty.”
