Word was received that Lt. Eugene (Scoop) Johnson, son of the Fred Johnsons, Brainerd, was killed in action in Korea. He died when his fighter bomber, flying off the carrier Kearsage, was shot down. He was a graduate of both Brainerd high school and junior college.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press published Leslie Bush’s picture and gave the Philadelphia Athletics pitcher a half column write-up. Bush, from Brainerd, is probably the youngest pitcher in the major leagues, says the Pioneer Press.
