20 years ago (1992)

(Photo) A classmate cheered and another shot videotape as ninth-graders who walked out of school in protest were “herded” back to school. They protested the fact eighth-graders would also be allowed to leave school to watch the homecoming parade downtown.

30 years ago (1982)

Competition for a much-coveted FAA flight service station has resulted in a local proposal with provisions for a $1 million tax levy vote if Brainerd is among the finalists for the center. Details were outlined by Tom Fitzpatrick to the airport commission.

40 years ago (1972)

Miss Hildur Finney has retired as secretary of the Water and Light department in Brainerd after a career of 44 years. Her position is being taken by Richard Johnson. Finney began work in 1928 when all bills were typed individually by a staff of three.

60 years ago (1952)

The month of September was the driest experienced in Brainerd in 15 years, according to a report by Homer Whiting of the State Forestry Bureau. Only .25 of an inch or rain fell; average for September is 3.25 inches. Similar dry conditions exist across the state.

80 years ago (1932)

October the 8th will see the end of pouring cement on the bridge at the foot of Main Street. Three small sections of railing need completion, and workmen have started installation of the decorative lamp posts. The bridge will soon be ready for traffic.

100 years ago (1912)

C. L. Nystrom had a full measure of trouble last night. His team of broncos bucked and broke his buggy and harness near the Iron Exchange Hotel. He lost his temper and verbally abused Policeman Miller. In the end he was fined $10 for drunkenness.

Have brought up the dry conditions & just what cause that?? Was it to many cars or cows & broncos back then??
