Fall enrollment at Brainerd Community College has reached 1,856 students, an all-time high. The head count, converted to full-time equivalents is up 8 percent from last year. BCC opened with 12 students in 1938, and had grown to 568 by 1983.

The Brainerd area, and many others in the state, is being flooded with a form from a Florida firm that purports to be a television questionnaire. People are told they will receive valuable prizes if they send it in with $14.80 to cover costs. It’s a scam.
40 years ago (1972)
Douglas Lorig, who has been serving as deacon at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Aitkin, will become rector of St. Paul’s in Brainerd after his ordination as priest on Sept. 30. His official election as rector will occur after his ordination by Bishop Philip McNairy.
60 years ago (1952)
(Photo) 1st Lt. Robert Olson, who left Brainerd with the 194th Tank Battalion and is now serving in Korea, receives the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action this summer. He’s recovered and now back commanding the 31st Tank Company in Korea.
80 years ago (1932)
Harry Hedstrom, who officers say has confessed to killing James Harney, prohibition agent, during a raid, was captured by Harney’s younger brother from Duluth. Hedstrom told of shooting Harney when the prohibition agent threatened to shoot him.
100 years ago (1912)
Col. Potter, of St. Paul, in charge of all government dams in the state, and his party recently made the first inspection tour of the Gull Lake Dam. He also examined the route of proposed canals to connect Gull, Round and Long Lakes, to be built for $15,000.
