Potlatch Corp. will eliminate about 20 full-time jobs by early 1993 as they reorganize distribution systems at the mill. Tom Palkie, production manager, said some of them might be retained in other jobs. Potlatch employs 700 workers at the Brainerd plant.

A cry of “taxation without representation” was raised by about 50 Lake Edward Township residents opposing their inclusion in the 30 Lakes Watershed District during a meeting in the township hall. It is one of 37 such districts around the state.

(Photo) The Brainerd Fire Department and the Nisswa Fire Department squared off in a water fight as part of the West Brainerd celebration over the weekend. The marker is attached to a wire, and Brainerd eventually drove it to the Nisswa side, for the win.

A soldier who was AWOL from the army, and was in municipal court for a disorderly conduct charge last week, was in court again today for writing bogus checks. Judge Henry Longfellow gave him 30 days in jail, but the army can have him on request.

Answering a query from sportsmen, game authorities emphasized that regulations handed down for this fall do not include shooting of prairie chickens. Open season on pheasant and partridge, known also as rruffed grouse, runs from noon Oct. 15th to Oct. 19th.
100 years ago (1912)
The 1912 football season was inaugurated on the local gridiron last week when 15 boys turned out for the initial practice at the Koering grounds. Only two veterans from last year’s team were on hand, so Coach Callan will have to develop from green material.
