Two men were arraigned in criminal court this morning on charges of having held up the Tom Thumb Superette on S. 6th Street. Police said the two were arrested later that night while allegedly assaulting a Duluth man behind the Lakeside Bar in downtown Brainerd.

Mayor Levi Johnson recently received a letter from Col. Carl Erickson, who left Brainerd with the 194th National Guard unit, that he will return to Brainerd on January 1. Col. Erickson is now stationed in Tokyo, Japan, and can compare what he saw there in 1945.

The city council considered the matter of raising the license fee for saloons from $500 to $1,000 per year. The vote was 5 to 5. Mayor H. P. Dunn broke the tie, voting “no.” He said the independent saloon would be harmed and replaced by corporate ownership.
