Downtown merchants do not necessarily agree whether there is a need for downtown parking. And they definitely don’t agree on how to finance a proposed parking lot. After discussion, the city council referred back to the EDA whether to purchase two lots.

(Photo) Mike Guin of Brainerd, flanked by runner-up Kevin Dickinson and 3rd placer Kevin Cole, won the 1982 World Champion Northern Pike tourney at Mille Lacs Lake, The tourney was sponsored by Northerns, Inc. Guin totaled 28-14 for the two days.

The Most Reverend Thomas Welch, Bishop of Duluth, followed 11:15 Mass by leading parishioners across the street to the new $302,000 St. Francis School. Welch formally blessed the building, assisted by Rev. Thomas Scott, pastor of St. Francis parish.

They may talk about flag pole sitting, marathons, walkathons, etc., but two Dispatch newsboys claim a record of another sort – that of going swimming for 100 consecutive days. The newsies are Les Volkl and Clarence Liners, and their goal is 150 days.
100 years ago (1912)
A. M. Opsahl, Fred Sanborn and two others had a ride on the hurricane deck of a caboose from Deerwood to Brainerd. Engineer Riddle was at the throttle and made it in 23 minutes. That ride on the caboose was more exciting than an auto ride.
