20 years ago (1992)

Where there’s a need there’s usually a way, and Georgianne Nienaber of rural Brainerd is trying to find it. Needs of the Hurricane Andrew homeless in south Florida are obvious, and Nienaber got the owners of Westgate Mall to enlist their 30 malls in the effort.

30 years ago (1982)

The first traces of hazardous chemicals dumped near the Baxter city well, almost a year ago, have been discovered in the water of a monitoring well. An official with the state Dept. of Agriculture said the concentrations found were far below a hazardous level.

40 years ago (1972)

(Photo) Brainerd firemen contributed $300 to the Salvation Army capital fund drive now under way. Presenting the check are Herb Stunek, volunteer fireman, and Fire Chief Ray Shortridge. Accepting for the Salvation Army is Don Samuelson.

60 years ago (1952)

(Photo) Mrs. Archie Genham (Dorothy Toumi) of Brainerd was chosen “Mrs. Minnesota” recently in Minneapolis. She will participate in the “Mrs. America” contest in Asbury Park, N.J. She is a graduate of Washington High School and attended Brainerd Junior College.

80 years ago (1932)

(Adv.) Play Ball! The famous House of David Ball Team vs. Brainerd at the new Bane Ball Park. The 1st Brainerd player to steal a base receives dinner for him and his wife at the Ransford Hotel. 1st player to score a run gets a picnic ham from Model Market.

100 years ago (1912)

About the best piece of road news ever heard in Brainerd came from County Commissioner Krech that the road to Gull Lake has been improved by spending nearly $500. Also, Krech noted that the bridge over the Long Lake narrows is now open.

Bridge over Long Lake Narrows

The bridge was over the North Long Lake narrows between the west bay and the main lake. The Fall 2009 Round and North Long Lake Associations Newsletter has a story about it on page 7.
