Crow Wing County’s unemployment rate fell below the statewide rate in June, despite the addition of 800 workers to the labor force. The county jobless rate was 5.4 percent in June, from 4.5 percent last year. The state rate is 5.5 percent and the nation is 7.8 percent.

Several drastic measures to cut the city’s budget by 5 percent were considered yesterday – including dissolving the engineering department and setting up an all-volunteer fire department. The personnel and finance committee set four priorities to cut $100,000.

The Brainerd American Legion team got an early 3-0 lead against Sauk Centre in District 6 play at Foley, then held on for a 3-2 win. Manager Gay Zelinske called in Wayne Caughey in relief of starter Mike Bialka to secure the win.
60 years ago (1952)
Apparently one day of freedom was enough for John Poylio, who was released from the county jail Friday after serving 30 days for theft. Finding a garage door open on Saturday, he entered and stole merchandise. He was apprehended and returned to jail.
80 years ago (1932)
Stroking par 36 going out and a 40 coming in, Joe Ryan, Brainerd golf star, led the Brainerd Country Club team to a 42 to 30 win over Staples golfers in an inter-city match. The local country club team will journey to Deerwood next week for another match.
100 years ago (1912)
At noon today John Ahrens, the well known farmer who has his home on Ahrens Hill, fell off the Northeast Brainerd bridge at the dam, dropping 50 feet to the river below. Two men on the far bank saw him strike the water but could not reach him in time.
