Gov. Wendell Anderson was told by county officials that some road washouts from the flood are a quarter-mile wide and 30 feet deep. South Long Lake homes were flooded when torrential rain caused the Nokasippi River to flow backward into the lake.

The Mississippi River held to its high of 14.3 feet at Aitkin today, but army engineers thought they could hold any further rise if there’s no more rain. More than 100,000 acres of farmland is flooded in Aitkin County, and many county roads are impassable.

A comprehensive program of improvements to enhance the value of property on the Gull Lake chain was launched today with the marking of shoals and beginning work to open the channel to Nisswa. Thirty property owners met and raised $185 to start the work.

When a stranger accosted a Southeast Brainerd woman who was taking laundry to customer, the lady reached for a nearby stick and dealt the masher a blow on the head which caused him to run away. A good stick will do much to avert unwanted attention.
