Keith Peterson tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight to lead the Brainerd Bees past the St. Mathias Saints 9-0 in Victory League East action. Steve Ebinger went 3-for-4 to lead the Bees offense, and Jay Sannes drove in three runs.

(Photo) The Minnesota Distinguished Service Medal was awarded to General John Vessey, a Brainerd area resident who serves as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The award was presented to him by Minnesota Gov. Al Quie.

Two escapees from Stillwater State Prison surrendered to authorities following a high-speed chase and a shootout with Highway Patrol Officer Floyd Wise near Staples. One escapee was injured in the exchange of gunfire and the patrol car was hit many times.

Some 800 fans who thought the Brainerd Braves encounter with Fairfax of the Western Minny League would be a thriller weren’t wrong. Willie Harris had a rocky start on the mound and Fairfax went up 4-0 in the 1st, before the locals rallied for a 7-4 victory.
80 years ago (1932)
The All Nations team of Sioux City, Iowa, squared the series with Brainerd at one game apiece with a 7-5 victory. A two-run rally by the locals in the ninth fell short. The deciding game will be played here late in the month when the touring Iowans return.
100 years ago (1912)
A valuable thoroughbred Holstein cow and bull belonging to Joe Caren of Crow Wing Township committed suicide last night by eating a two pound package of dry Paris green, dying in agony. The potato bug killer was left in the wagon box while Caren worked.
