(Photo) Carmen Babineau races her way to victory at the Soapbox Derby held near the Brainerd High Rise, taking the girls’ age 10-15 2nd class trophy. Other winners were Diana and Travis Schultz, and Jim Madland. Matthew Nimeth had best appearing car.
40 years ago (1972)
(Photo) Virgil Ward, who conducts a nationally-syndicated TV program on fishing, found South Long Lake a hot spot for walleyes. Guided by local tackle manufacturers Al Lindner and Nick Adams, they caught a big stringer of 3 to 8 pounders in 14-17 feet of water.
60 years ago (1952)
Despite a pair of masterful pitching performances by Jerry Hill and Joe Perrault, the Brainerd Warriors couldn’t quite take home the Region Six baseball crown. Hill two-hit Fergus Falls to win the semi at 4-2, but Perrault’s two-hitter couldn’t stop Melrose in the final.
80 years ago (1932)
A new record for wall-eyed pike in this area was believed established when Charles Ramsey, night operator of the Sylvan Dam on the Crow Wing River, caught a 10.25 pounder. He used a daredevil lure and hooked the fish behind the gills.
100 years ago (1912)
Baseball will not have all the monopoly for outside athletics this summer. Tennis is taking hold on scores of young people. Dr. A. W. Ide and 24 others have formed an association, put forth $10 each, and a double court is being made south of the courthouse.

It has been a day or 2 since I have heard the name Virgil Ward. I guess I can say I liked a Ward now. Gee I hope they where not related.
