Joseph R. Dunn, 86, of Scottsdale, Ariz., has died. He was postmaster of the Brainerd Regional Office for 25 years. He was born in Brainerd and graduated from Notre Dame University. Before being named postmaster he ran Dunn Drug, founded by his father in 1897.

(Photo) Marv Nutting receives the Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds Award from Carl Erickson, emcee of the ceremony. Nutting was noted for his promotion of baseball, softball and bowling, plus his participation in many service and fraternal organizations.

Brainerd Fire Chief Ray Shortridge was elected president of the Minnesota State Fire Department Association at the group’s convention which concluded here today. Some 1,500 firemen and their wives were in Brainerd for the annual affair.
60 years ago (1952)
The usual solemn atmosphere of the Crow Wing County court house was changed to bustling activity today as members of the Flower Society arranged flowers for the annual peony show. Old guard organizers included Mrs. Frank Jensen and Mrs. Bill Demmers.
80 years ago (1932)
Means of combating a threatened plague of grasshoppers in Crow Wing County were available to area farmers due to the activity of E. G. Roth, extension agent. While on a trip to St. Paul he managed to secure four tons of poison mash to stem the outbreak.
100 years ago (1912)
(Adv.) Patronize Walker’s Hall dances. The dances are conducted by Brainerd citizens and members of organized labor. Every convenience is arranged for: electric program, two electric ceiling fans, ice water and an excellent dance floor. Blue Ribbon Orchestra plays.
