30 years ago (1982)

Not since the 1930s have Crow Wing and area counties witnessed such an influx of new residents, especially those of retirement age. From 1970 to 1980 lake area counties and Twin Cities suburbs have experienced a substantial increase in those over age 65.

40 years ago (1972)

There will be 395 students out of a class of 429 that will participate in commencement exercises at the high school gym tomorrow night. Twenty-five seniors decided not to take part in the ceremonies and the remainder need to take summer classes.

60 years ago (1952)

“The greatest honor you can render to them is to do your part in making this nation a noble nation,” said Rev. Edward G. Barrow, at Memorial services, when he referred to the price paid by the war dead. “Make yourselves living memorials to those who died.”

80 years ago (1932)

Two men were fined $10 plus costs in front of Justice of the Peace Parks in Nisswa for having more than the legal limit of pickerel (northerns) in possession. Charges were preferred by Deputy Game Wardens Legg and Cardle. The men had caught 75 pickerel.

100 years ago (1912)

Chas. Mahlum, Bill Marx and Sam English celebrated Memorial Day by adorning the waters of Blackduck Lake with their presence. The water became rough, bringing to the surface many beautiful pike, throwing more than the limit into the boats with the boys.
