Three major wildfires erupted in the region yesterday, prompting evacuation of about a dozen homes. DNR firefighters, area fire departments, air tankers and helicopters cut the fires off before any buildings were lost, but it was nip and tuck for awhile.

(Photo) Work began this week at the Round Lake Access – a site which has been opposed by many area residents who claim it is not suitable for a public landing. The DNR told residents and the county board that all problems can be resolved, managed or controlled.

Extra! Fawcett granted divorce! Judge Graham Torrance, at 3:45 this afternoon, granted the divorce petition of Capt. Billy Fawcett vs. Antoinette Fisher Fawcett. He will pay his ex-wife $60,000 and will post 400 shares of Fawcett Publications as bond.
100 years ago (1912)
At 4:30 p.m. this afternoon the 200-pound cover of a scrubber tank blew off at the power company’s plant and electric current was shut off. This delayed the Dispatch in printing its daily edition.
