District Judge Robert Ryan confirmed today that he will retire at the conclusion of his present term. When announcement was made, Brainerd attorney Fred Casey announced he would seek the position. Ryan was elected 12 years ago, replacing Henry Longfellow.

More than 7,000 pounds of government surplus American cheese was distributed to eligible low-income Brainerd residents at the Brainerd Senior Center and VFW Hall. The five-pound boxes of cheese ran out by 1 p.m., but more were brought in from area towns.

A 16-year-old Brainerd student is at St. Joseph’s Hospital suffering from injuries received in gymnastics class at the high school. He was working out on the pommel horse when he slipped, hitting his head on the base and knocking himself out.

Military police will be detailed in Brainerd this year during the training season at Camp Ripley, according to arrangements made by the Reserve Officers Assn. at a dinner meeting at Archer’s Café. The city police have agreed to headquarter the group at the police station.
