The Brainerd girl’s basketball team is going to the big dance. The Warriors waltzed to their first Section 8AA championship and trip to state with a 53-45 win over Bemidji. The Warriors, 24-1 and ranked fifth in the state, only trailed once in the game at 2-0.

Brainerd High School swimmer Joe Vrudny, runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke at last year’s state meet, duplicated that finish in the 1982 state meet. His career best 54.36 was second to Bob Hauck’s 53.9. Vrudny was 1.5 seconds under his time from last year.

C-I, the District 24 champion — bidding for its 10th regional title and a trip to the state tournament — came from behind midway in the final quarter to beat Detroit Lakes 37-35. Jim Nyberg hit the winning basket with 2:50 to play, and C-I stalled out the game.

The Harlem Globe Trotters moved on to Ashland, Wis., after beating the Brainerd Merchants by 29-25. The secret of instructions to the Trotters of when to play hard and when to cut up the floor come through finger signs from their manager at the scorers table.
100 years ago (1912)
Thomas Barry shot and killed a large timber wolf near his home six miles northwest of Brainerd. Mr. Barry drew $3.50 bounty from the county and $7.50 from the state. Since the hide is worth about $4, Mr. Barry’s lucky shot will bring him a total of $15.
