30 years ago (1982)

A Brainerd State Patrol dispatcher had succinct advice for motorists planning a trip today: “Don’t go north!” “The roads are terrible up north,” said Mike Marohn. “Even the sanding trucks are getting stuck on the hills.” Freezing rain coated roads with ice.

40 years ago (1972)

Over 100 Brainerd school patrol members were treated to all the hot dogs, pop and ice cream they could eat at their annual party sponsored by the American Legion. Then they paraded to the Paramount Theatre for a free show sponsored by manager Chet Raasch.

80 years ago (1932)

(Edit.) A man who has not had any job for the past year wrote this to a newspaper: “When you see your last few dollars going, no hope of work, your thoughts become bitter and hateful.” That brief sentence illuminates the most dismaying part of the depression.

100 years ago (1912)

The Brainerd Ski and Canoe Club went to Hubert today. In the party were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hall, M/M Howard Ingersoll, Nell Fie Alderman and Walter Wieland. Miss Marian Holmes will try to repeat her jump of 113 feet made on a trip to Norway.
