The Baxter City Council approved a site plan and use permit for Esser’s Warehouse Liquors and Brainerd Savings & Loan to open new locations. Dick Esser, partner with brother Steve, said they will own the building and lease a portion to the savings and loan.
30 years ago (1982)
A former Brainerd resident, Walt Sjolund, is the leading candidate to replace former Water and Light superintendent Elmer Lalli. The city council is also considering hiring a public safety director to replace both the fire chief and chief of police positions.
40 years ago (1972)
Brainerd holds the unenviable position of being the coldest spot in the lower 48 states this morning. At 8 a.m. it was 35 degrees below zero at Walter Wieland Field. One of the usual cold spots, Roseau, was a “warm” 31 degrees below zero. No break is foreseen.
60 years ago (1952)
Vandals have destroyed signs at the ski hill north of the airport, said Jake Prestun of the Brainerd Ski Club. It appears they were shot with a rifle and chopped with a hatchet. Work is going ahead on the lodge and warming house, expected to open shortly.

Defensively stronger than their offensive abilities, Brainerd and Staples battled in a hard checking basketball game here last night, winning by a score of 11-9. Even speedy floor work on the aggressive failed to penetrate the defensive zones of either team.

Monday night was the most strenuous session that this city council – or any in the past five years – has indulged in. There was upheaval in all directions and the voting was a surprise to many. All party lines were cast aside in front of a huge audience.
