An unrelenting January storm dumped 12 inches of snow on Brainerd Friday night and Saturday, as plow crews tried to keep roads clear. A host of activities were canceled or postponed, including the Gull Lake 400 Snowmobile Race.

The 7th Annual International 500 Snowmobile Race, first event of the St. Paul Winter Carnival, will include both Aitkin and Cass counties on its route, with a stopover in Walker. Over 300 riders will compete in the 4-day race, beginning in Winnipeg.

A 53-year-old Crosby man was sentenced to life in Stillwater prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. He had shot and killed the Deerwood village marshal in an altercation at the Deerwood municipal liquor store. The marshal had been on the job a week.

Son will be pitted against father in the June primary election for 1st District County Commissioner. Harlow Dewing will run against his father, John Dewing, veteran commissioner who seeks re-election. Six candidates have already filed.

(Letter) I note the opinion of the Dispatch on the proposed city hall site, and find it is not the sentiment of the people. A building built to accommodate all city departments and No. 1 Hose Co. should be centrally located. The proposed site is halfway to Staples.
