Vacant grocery stores are capturing the interest of school officials in Brainerd as alternate sites for education. The Brainerd School Board and Washington Middle School have discussed – hypothetically – leasing the former Red Owl store to ease a space crunch.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s office has cleared up a rash of fish house break-ins and vandalism, including possible arson. Two suspects will be charged with break-ins on Mission and Lake Edward; two more with vandalism of fish houses on Rice Lake.

60 years ago (1952)
Over 10 million phone calls were completed from the 5,093 telephone stations in Brainerd in 1951, with well over a million dollars invested in plant and equipment to handle them. This is an increase from 1930, when there were 2,000 telephones here.
80 years ago (1932)
The Brainerd Red Devils won a costly 4-0 victory over the Nisswa Pucksters on the Nisswa rink. Clarence Carlson was hit by a flying puck, cut his lip, injured his teeth and may have a jaw fracture. Gabiou and Rofidal each scored twice for Brainerd.
100 years ago (1912)
The Brainerd Ice Co. will start to cut ice on January 8th. This notice is important to the many teamsters who need to get their sleds ready. The cut is expected to be large, and the recent cold snap assures ice of the proper thickness. Lack of snow will help as well.
