Workers at Crow Wing Coop Power and Light have voted 36-15 in favor of union representation at the bargaining table. The vote affected about 50 maintenance and construction employees. Next step is to negotiate the first contract.

30 years ago (1981)

Brainerd City Council members — anxiously looking for ways to trim city expenditures — were unable to find any specific areas which could be chopped from the Water & Light Dept. capital budget. The council will adopt its budget at an upcoming meeting.

40 years ago (1971)

Mrs. Mildred Michaelis, a candidate in the city election, charged today that the city council discussed a new form of government at a secret meeting on Saturday morning. The Dispatch reported aldermen at the meeting saying only salaries were discussed.

60 years ago (1951)

Brainerd business stepped into control of the new Brainerd city council in yesterday’s election, capturing five of the seven seats. They have nosed out what has been known as a “labor controlled council” for the first time in many years.

Capt. Billy Fawcett, big game hunter, world traveler and magazine publisher, will entertain a fellow celebrity at Breezy Point this weekend. Jack Dempsey, former world’s heavyweight champion, will motor here after his comeback bouts tonight in Fargo.
